An 'Oasis: Supersonic' appreciation post.
An 'Oasis: Supersonic' appreciation post.
In celebration of the very limited release of ‘Oasis: Supersonic’ in New Zealand cinemas - coming to select cinemas this weekend, from October 14th-16th, we’ve decided to compile some reasons that we’re excited to watch the film.
But first, here’s some official info on the film:
“From director Mat Whitecross and the Academy Award winning producers of Amy, Oasis: Supersonic tells the remarkable story of iconic band Oasis – in their own words.
This is Liam and Noel as they really are: unruly and unguarded, affectionate and impassioned - filmed on the way up, in the eye of the storm, before anyone had a chance to grasp the impact they would have on the planet.
On the making of the film, director Mat Whitecross explains "After conversations with Noel and Liam, we agreed the film should be constructed solely from archive footage with contemporary voices telling the story. The voice-over approach helped keep things feeling in the moment. We knew it was unlikely Noel and Liam would want to do their interviews together, but with voice-over, the viewer would feel they were having a conversation."
Featuring extensive unseen archive footage, Oasis: Supersonic charts the meteoric rise of Oasis from the council estates of Manchester to some of the biggest concerts of all time in just 3 short years. This palpable, raw and moving film shines a light on one of the most genre - and generation-defining British bands that has ever existed.”
Now here are five reasons why we’re excited to watch the film:
#1. In the lead-up to the film’s release, a clip has been released called ‘Bad Reputation’, which sees the duo discussing their “hooligan” antics.
Liam says in the clip: "If you're feeling a bit of a geezer, right, whoever threw the fucking bottle, let’s have you up here and I’ll slap you in front of the crowd. I’m not here to get fucking things thrown at me - fucking coconut stall."

#2. One of our faves, Alexa Chung, is also excited for the film’s release, posting the following on her Instagram:
#3. Following the film’s premiere in London earlier this month, Liam Gallagher took part in a live Q&A, which was as hilarious as you’d expect. Highlights include when he took a dig at Noel - “He's far too busy in his big fucking house. He's probably eating tofu right now as we speak with a face peel on. That's what they get up to, these posh people.”

#4. The film is directed by Mat Whitecross, who’s also set to be working on a Coldplay film - currently on tour with them filming their live show - and is produced by Academy Award winning producers James Gay Reese and Asif Kapadia (known for ‘Amy’).

#5. Reviews of the film are already loving it - with NME saying, “If you weren’t craving an Oasis reunion before, then this will have you begging for it.” Liam’s also already talking about a sequel for the film, so there’s even more reason to watch the first one while you can.
