Review: Shawn Mendes x iHeartRadio - Sydney’s Trackdown Stage, October 2016.

As part of his intensive Australian promotional schedule ahead of two sold-out shows at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, Shawn Mendes took to the tiny Trackdown Stage (a space normally reserved for recording film scores for the likes of ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Australia’) to perform an intimate half-hour show for a very lucky group of fans.

Opening with ‘Three Empty Words’ from his brand new sophomore album, ‘Illuminate’, Shawn was clearly excited, as this was his first ever show in Australia. With no barricade between him and the audience, the show was a true once in a lifetime opportunity to see Shawn in such a small environment - and one that the crowd truly relished.

Changing guitar between every song, ‘Ruin’ showcased his electric guitar skills, and ‘Mercy’ saw him with no guitar at all, instead focusing on the intensive vocals throughout the song. Apologetic between songs, Shawn said, “My voice keeps cracking a lot - I’m sorry!”, and fans clearly forgave him, out-singing him at points during the show.

Closing with a piano rendition of his hit ‘Stitches’ - which was drawn out with piano runs and slowed down parts - Mendes had the whole venue in awe of his talents, and wanting more than just five songs.

Set-List:

Three Empty Words
Ruin
Treat You Better
Mercy
Stitches
