Review: Melanie Martinez - Auckland Town Hall, January 2016.
For anyone familiar with Melanie Martinez and her debut album 'Crybaby', you'll know the idea behind the concept and character that is Crybaby. Witnessing Melanie live, sees her embody this character entirely, and throughout her short set while opening for Adam Lambert at Auckland's Town Hall last night, she proved her talent - not only as a songwriter, but as a live performer too.
Opening with the title-track from the album, 'Crybaby' welcomed the audience into Melanie's world - from her baby-esque outfit (yes, she was wearing white bloomers), to her kooky yet excitable dancing, and her on-point vocals (from someone who was found on 'The Voice', her vocals were naturally excellent).
She played seven songs from her debut album, which won over the crowd - and a fair number of people were already familiar with her, singing along to all of the lyrics. Closing with 'Mrs Potato Head', a song about plastic surgery and real beauty, Melanie was clearly ecstatic to be a part of this tour - and the audience was equally ecstatic to be witness to it.
