Review: The CDM Chip Crawl.
Review: The CDM Chip Crawl.
Because chips are one of Coup De Main’s favourite things to eat, we decided to embark on a Chip Crawl of Auckland a few weeks ago, in order to find what we think are the very best chips.
Check out our findings below…
Burger Burger - Potato Skins with Truffle Aioli
Going to a place with the name burger in the name twice means I wasn’t all that hopeful about their chips. Potato skins are their unique item on the menu, which evokes images of crispy skin potatoes, however they were quite thick and almost drowned in oil (truffle oil, for that matter), so they might not be for everyone’s liking. To be fair, when you’re focusing on the incredible burgers that they sell, the chips don’t matter that much.

Toru - Crinkle Chips with Smoked Paprika and Lemon Mayo
When you go into somewhere with high expectations, I’m always worried. My friends and colleagues had told me incredible things about Toru, but my mind was blown. Their chips were even better than how they were described to me - they’re like thick crinkle-cut shaped fries, served with paprika salt (who invented this?! I need it on everything I eat from now on), and a lemon aioli. Not only was this definitely my favourite, but their staff were super lovely too - which always makes a chip-eating venture more enjoyable!

McDonald’s - Classic Fries
McDonald’s are kind of the classic when it comes to chips, so we simply couldn’t leave them out of this chip crawl. Their chips are great because they’re for everyone - some are soft, some are super crunchy, there’s a great mix. I’ve never been let down on the seasoning on their fries either, and the consistency behind them is key. They also source their potatoes from farms in Canterbury, and I’m all about supporting NZ businesses. I’m lovin’ it, as always.

Coco’s Cantina - Polenta Chips
If you ever want to have chips that are “healthy” (I mean, as healthy as chips can be), then Polenta Chips are the way to go. I never really knew what polenta was, and Coco’s fried goodness was my way of introduction, and I’m now in love. Ultra crunchy, with a softer texture inside than french fries, these provide a welcome change from your regular fry.

Fatimas - Potato Kofta’s with Sweet Chilli Aioli
Similar to tater tots, these koftas pack some major crunch. There’s something about these koftas that are reminiscent of hash-browns, but (somehow) even better! Served with a delicious aioli that has a subtle chilli bite to it, these bite-sized pieces of heaven are super addictive.
P.S. If you want to feel like Iron Man in ‘The Avengers’, I recommend ordering these with Fatima’s amazing shawarma.
