"It's better to have loved," concludes Tucker Pillsbury about the aftermath of break-ups and his sophomore Role Model album, 'Kansas Anymore'. Continuing, he further explains: "The album is about heartbreak, but it's also about homesickness, which is heartbreak to me, but now having gone through that at such a late point in my life, I feel like I'm just like: 'Everyone should go through that!' Now I fully support breakups - everyone should experience it at some point because the transformation and self-discovery that comes after the ugly phase of 'what have I done?' or whatever, and just being lost once you get over that hump, it's just the most beautiful self-discovery slut era."
Pillsbury adds: "There's a mature way to look back on a relationship, or a relationship that maybe is coming to an end, and I think there's a mature way to go about it. I'm just realising that if you love something, let it free, and I think that's important and maybe comes later in your 20s."
While on tour supporting Gracie Abrams in New York recently, Coup De Main went on a rowboat date with Pillsbury in Central Park to discuss everything Role Model - from feeling disillusioned with living in Los Angeles, to if there's any difference between Tucker and his musical alter ego.
"It's a performance - and I still don't know if I'm doing a character. The lines are getting blurry, but it's interesting to have to flip that switch because I'm being myself on stage, like that is me, but me being mute for the whole day up until the show is also very me. It's weird, but maybe the lines aren't blurred. I feel like I'm grounded. There's no character. Whether it's the songwriting, or on stage, or even on social media with being funny there, that's how I am with my friends. So, maybe I am being myself. I feel like this is how celebrities lose their minds - when they start going schizophrenic a little bit, but I don't know."
"Once the album came out, I had a big relief, but somewhere in the two years that we were writing the album, I was seriously questioning what I was doing with my life and LA. 'Why do I have to be in this city to pursue this career, and is it worth it?' Me wasting my days in a city that really bums me out to be there... Is it worth that to chase my dream? I had a lot of existential thoughts about what I was doing with my life. That song ['Slipfast'] is fully about that, and me wanting to just let it all burn down."
