"I'm not one of a kind, but I'm a kind one / And I'll show it to myself," expresses South African-born, Berlin-based musician Alice Phoebe Lou on her latest single, 'The World Above'. The song closed an old chapter and opened a new one for Lou, and she shares: "I was coming out of a dark place and finally able to put some difficult things behind me and have a new perspective going forward."
Touring with Clairo as a part of her 'Charm' tour performing to audiences across North America, Alice Phoebe Lou compiled a photo diary for us while on tour with Clairo and chatted to us about her tour experience...
COUP DE MAIN: You're currently touring with Clairo on her 'Charm' tour - how is it going so far?
ALICE PHOEBE LOU: It's been a wonderful whirlwind! I was quite nervous to play to such big audiences but they have been so warm and welcoming - just like Claire and the band who we absolutely love being on the road with. The crew has been so inspiring to witness and we have felt like a part of the family from the first day.
CDM: What song have you been loving performing live recently?
ALICE: I've really been enjoying playing 'Open My Door' as many of the audience members know the song already and are so happy to hear it and it's a song that makes me feel powerful and vulnerable at once.
CDM: Do you have a show that you're most excited to play?
ALICE: Playing the Grand Ole Opry is a dream come true!
CDM: You recently came to New Zealand last year - did you have a favourite memory from your time down here?
ALICE: Going to Waiheke for a few days with the band and completely unwinding on the beach for a few days after an intense tour was a big highlight.
CDM: What was running through your mind when you wrote 'The World Above'?
ALICE: I was coming out of a dark place and finally able to put some difficult things behind me and have a new perspective going forward. Felt like the start of a new chapter for me and finally making peace with many things from my past.
CDM: What are your tour essentials?
ALICE: My pillow, good earplugs, and an eye mask. Need my sleep!
